中国山水画小品，自然属于那种独舞与诗句，凭着简练的外在形式表现精炼的内在品质。首先，小品画没有“大作”的巨大尺幅，通常采用条屏、团扇、小斗方及册页、手卷等形式。与那种以泰山压顶之势在大展览厅中展出的“大作”相比，小品画更具生活化地作为日常的装饰品。从古及今，宫庭皇室、平民百姓都可享用到这种小巧精悍的艺术品。其次，小品画不管从形式、题材、手法上都与“大作”保持着一定距离，小品画极为机缘十生的随意自由特性允许其表现手法多种多样，可以是极为工整的精刻细描，又可以是逸笔草草。它不象大作品那样需样样兼顾求全，因为尺幅不同，通常仅靠有限的造型寓意十生地隐喻无尽的心中之境。题材上也可以简练到～树一石、一山一水的细小局部，是典型的“以小见大”的中国艺术表现手法。山水画小品以其特有的精悍品十生，舍弃了诸多繁琐的关系，因而更为依赖于意象的象征与意境的纯化。山水画的意象，是构成山水画的重要语言要素，意象是意中的物象，是物体原本形象经由艺术化地处理提炼之后的理想化形象，它依赖于中国画的语言载体——笔墨的运用来构建成绘画的符号。山水画的各种造型要素比如山、水、树、石、烟云、屋宇、点景等都只是一种符号化的意象，且都具备各自的不同画法。因此，山水画是由各种不同的符号要素构成的意象群，再由意象的关系构成意境。同样，由于意象经过艺术化的提炼与纯化，意境往往体现出一种与真实的风景在外形上不一致而在精神上相一致的特性.......
